Exhibition On View:
August 4 - October 26, 2008

Architecture and the City is the nation's only festival devoted to celebrating the unique built environment and design community of San Francisco. Last year more than 20,000 people from around the world took part in the festivities, which featured architecturally significant home tours, film screenings, lectures, exhibitions and more.

>Currently, we are seeking submissions for the central exhibition: Urban RE:Interventions.

Urban RE:Interventions explores perspectives on the urban environment through the lens of architects, designers, landscape architects and urban guerillas. From small-scale moments at the street level to large-scale imagineering of the city of San Francisco as a whole, the exhibition will re-envision how awkward spaces can be made beautiful. Submissions may be theoretical or built.

Projects showcased in the exhibition will highlight how place-making can improve the way people move through and engage with urban spaces at every scale. Whether it’s a park bench or a city- wide master plan, submissions may consider issues of circulation, connection, re-appropriation, transition, ecology, or technology.

Selected entries cannot have been previously published and should include a thoughtful description of how this intervention contributes to a strong sustainable, neighborhood or community context.

FAQs

Who can participate?
The exhibition is open to any individual or group with an idea for how we can improve the San Francisco cityscape.

This all sounds great, but where do I start?
Consider the following:
What annoys you about San Francisco’s streetscape? How could it be improved?
If you could remake your neighborhood where would you start?
How could you connect the city to disengaged communities and/or individuals?
How can the urban form better promote community?
What are you already doing to improve your local environment?

Does the idea have to be finished before I submit?
No. The jury will select the most innovative submissions irrespective of whether they have been fully realized. If you or your team is selected, the curators of the exhibit will work you in the month prior to the exhibition to best prepare your project for display.
