The Center for Architecture and Design is pleased to announce the winners of Architecture Is..., our first short film competition! We received almost 50 entries from around the world, broaching subjects from the technical to the personal and using many cinematic styles. First prize winners received an iPad2 and Second prize winners received a Kodak Playsport camera.

YOUTH WINNERS:

 

1st Place:"Architecture Is Us" by SoYoung Park, from Seongnam, South Korea. The jurors commented: "We are impressed with the exploration of a very specific aspect of architectural memory, personal experience. The setting, in Seoul, makes the aspect of architectural memory even more poignant."

 

2nd Place:"Rush" by Myles Bess from Oakland, CA. The jurors commented: "We are intrigued by the exploration of architecture as an obstacle and creative navigation through space. This video was a very personal experience of architecture rather than a literal definition."


 


ADULT WINNERS:

1st place: "Architecture Is" by Raoyang Yang from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The jurors were impressed with this thoughtful and visually arresting video.


2nd Place:"Architecture Is... Nothing Without You" by Alexa Getting, San Francisco, CA The jurors noted the integration of standard views of architecture, but then a deeper exploration of its complexities and challenges.



Honorable Mention: "Architecture Is..." by Chris Chan, William Gott, Kevin Hyun, Brett Perl, Sharon Rubin, and John Swanson, from Carnegie Mellon School of Architecture. The jurors appreciated the tactile and flexible, "open to interpretation" quality of this entry.

 

Honorable Mention:"Being There" by Tim Griffith, San Francisco, CA The jurors were impressed with the beautiful imagery, calling this entry "visually stunning."


Honorable Mention:"Architecture Is" by Vincent Tjiang and Reza Adigraha Gunawan from the Academy of Art University, San Francisco. The jurors were impressed with this clever piece, calling it "fun to watch."

 

 
A special thank you to students from Carnegie Mellon School of Architecture who participated with several fun and engaging entries as part of a class assignment.
